Event Day Registration and Arrangements

Winchester Pedal Paddle Pace – Sunday 16th July 2017

Event Day Registration and Arrangements

Thank you for registering to take part in this event and raising much needed funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Before the event:

Ø  Familiarise yourself with the course. Maps are available on the website at www.winchesterppp.co.uk

Ø  Check your bike and make sure you have a helmet and water bottle

Ø  Plan how you will get to Palmer’s Field and where to park (if driving) – signs will be up to direct you to St Catherine’s P&R and from there to event registration

Ø  Bike racks are provided at Palmer’s Field. You can lock your bike to the rack with a simple padlock or chain

Ø  Hargroves Cycles will be on hand if you need any last minute bike tweaks. Coffee, bacon rolls, ice cream, warm ups and massage will also be setting up from 08:00

Ø  Registration opens at 07:00 and closes at 08:45 sharp at the Kingsgate Tennis Club at the top of Palmer’s Field

Ø  Collect your registration number, electronic chip and wave number from the registration desk

Ø  Please aim to arrive in good time – registration works best with a steady stream rather than a sudden surge!

Ø  If you are bringing family/friends, encourage them to bring a picnic, rugs, picnic chairs, sun umbrellas. We always need more marshals so if they could help we would be very grateful. If so please email there details to info@winchesterppp.co.uk.  They will be needed from 08:30 to approximately 13:00

Ø  If you are part of a team, your cyclist can report to the registration desk for the whole team

Ø  There is nowhere secure to leave belongings

Ø  Portaloos and a gazebo for changing will be on site

Ø  A race briefing will be held at 08:55 in Palmer’s Field

The Event itself:

Ø The race starts with the cycle, followed by the run and finally the kayak

Ø This is an event for all abilities to raise much needed funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, so keep it friendly.  This is NOT a closed road event so obey the Highway Code and don’t take risks

Ø  Be aware that the cycle starts from the Winchester Guildhall, following registration and the briefing at Palmer’s Field. You will be led down to the start from Palmer’s Field at 09:10

Ø  Wave 1 will start at 09:30, wave 2 at 09:45 and wave 3 at 10:05. The fastest competitors will be in the first wave and your wave will be confirmed at registration. We will be taking cyclists to the Guildhall in ‘crocodile’ fashion from Palmer’s Field. There are coffee shops and toilets at the Guildhall so waiting does not have to be too painful

Ø  Water will be available at the half way point of the run, at the run/kayak transition and with your goodie bag

Ø  Marshals will be posted along the route to direct cyclists and runners. There will be water marshals to assist any paddlers who need it

After the event:

Ø Unfortunately there are no shower facilities

Ø Picnic in the sun! – BBQ and drinks will be available at Palmer’s Field. The Queen Inn on Kingsgate Street is hosting a BBQ later in the afternoon

Ø  You can check your results at the timing van and will publish the results website on the day

Ø  Awards anticipated from 13:00 followed by a grand fund raising raffle draw.

First aid will be available at Palmers Field.

Once the results have been collated, a presentation will take place for the following categories.

The Course – a reminder:

Cycle Route – From Winchester Guildhall cycle up Magdalen Hill and along the Alresford Road. Continue along the Alresford Road, turn left at Fair Lane and continue along the lane until you reach Easton. Turn right at the Cricketers pub and cycle towards Avington. At Avington turn left towards Itchen Abbas and on to Station Hill. Turn left on to Easton Lane and continue back down Chapel Lane to the Alresford Road. Turn right along the Alresford Road, down Magdalen Hill, turn left along Chesil Street and then right into Wharf Hill and then left along Domum Road, arriving back at Palmers Field.

Please be aware that these roads are open to the public and normal traffic. Take care!

The route will be signposted and marshals will be available at key points to direct cyclists. There are no roadworks or temporary traffic lights that we are aware of but PLEASE stop if a marshal signals you to do so.

Run Route – From Palmer’s Field up on to the newly restored Hockley viaduct route. Run to the far end of the viaduct, round the water table and back. Again marshals and signposts will be available to guide you.

Kayak Route – 2 km along the Itchen Navigation Canal next to Palmers Field.

Transitions are not timed, so you won’t be penalised for taking a moment to get your breath back before heading out on the next leg.   If you choose to you will be able to run immediately after cycling but there may be an enforced pause between the run and kayak owing to limited numbers of kayaks.

If you have any queries please email info@winchesterppp.co.uk. Good Luck and have fun!

And finally, Alton Sports have put together a great offer for you on the attached flyer. There’s still time to get a brand spanking new pair of running shoes before the  big day.
